Published: November 2006 After eight quiet years, the Dutch generation sector has suddenly seen a total of 6GW of new-build proposals. On top of this, there have been announcements of plant lifetime extensions and interconnection capacity is being expanded. Are these proposals profitable investments, or are incumbents engaging in strategic bluff to ward new entrants away from a gradually tightening market? In this report we aim to shed some light into the murky waters of Dutch development activity. Specifically, we review the current situation regarding new (large-scale) generation and interconnection capacity development. Clearly it is not possible to report board-room discussions, but with an ear to the ground and a close eye kept on snippets of information we have managed to assemble a report with worthwhile insights for investors, incumbents, and new entrants alike. UPDATE: This report was first published in October 2005 and has been updated every six months.

Published: May 2008 In our latest multi-client market study, we focus on the German power generation market. Through the development and modelling of a Base scenario, we present the results of an in-depth power market study. We explore the development of new capacity, interconnection, prices, spreads and profitability. To undertake this task, we use the PLEXOS for Power Systems market modelling tool to derive detailed results for the period 2008-2030. Besides Germany, we have modelled the entire north-west European market (including France, Belgium and Netherlands) and present selected result for these markets. Note: This report is in presentation (Powerpoint) format. This makes it easier for the reader to highlight the main conclusions whilst still presenting plenty of background and discussion.
Since the start of liberalisation in the late 1990's, the Benelux power market has seen significant activity in all parts of the value chain. Particularly the level of activity in the Dutch power sector has been very high. Belgium has also seen increasing activity after an initial slow start of the liberalisation process. The Benelux power market continues to be a highly complex market that requires continue monitoring. In the background reports we set out: - The legal and market structure and how the various markets function - The key generation players and the key distribution/supply players - Transmission system ownership and operation - Regulation Belgium: Updated regularly Netherlands: Last updated: June 2006
